Maui: Sunrise to Sunset

Well, we woke up before dawn...but our bodies think we slept in. So we got dressed for church and walked across the road to the the beach to watch the sunrise.

Found a little crab digging in...

It's gorgeous here.

I love the way he always wants to show me things and wants to be with me. It's amazing to have this time together.

We went out to find a church building and attend at least sacrament. We didn't really have church clothes, but I had a couple casual dresses and we hoped we wouldn't be the only visitors there in shorts and flip flops. And we weren't. It was fun to experience the little differences in attending on the island. So much of it was the same, but they were saying goodbye to a family, so they all sang Aloha Oe to them. It was lovely!

It's Sunday, but we definitely needed to get some groceries for the week, so we stopped at Walmart for some staples. This is where we ran into our first island rooster. They are everywhere!

We spent a good while perusing the snack aisle for strange candies and island favorites. I am not super adventurous, but I did like the sound of these Mochi balls.

We went back to the condo and Mark got right to work removing the doors from the Jeep. He wanted the full experience! Farmer carry!

It was so fun...I'm not going to lie. It's one of the things that I love about Mark...he isn't afraid to DO STUFF. He wants to, so he does. And I am along for the ride. The very WINDY ride. We were honest-to-goodness buffeted by the wind! \

Still worth it.

We drove along the coastline and stopped when we found a beautiful spot of beach. We hopped in and laid on the sand. No big plans.

We found another stretch that was all these cool, round volcanic rocks. Coconut husks strewn about...all nonchalant and islandy.

Then we decided to head to Lahaina for snorkeling gear. This stretch of road was my favorite.

We rented boogie boards and 2 snorkeling kits and when we came out of the shop, a woman approached us and very kindly informed us that there is a local ordinance against having the doors off the rental jeeps. If we are pulled over, it is a 800 dollar fine. Of course, I super freaked out and wanted to head straight home. Mark did not freak out because he does not have an overactive fear of authority and probably realized if we were pulled over, we could let them know that we were unaware of the ordinance and all would be well.

However, he has a healthy respect for my neurosis. We headed back to the condo to retrieve the doors.

But first!! A quick stop at Ululani's for shave ice. Alisa insisted we go early and often. And she wasn't lying...this was heavenly. It was so light and the flavors were made from fruit juices, not sugary at all. This is going to be a problem.

Coconut ice cream in the middle!

We did eventually return for the doors. We were greeted by the hilarious little lizards that like to sun themselves on the sidewalks and then LEAP into the bushes as you walk up. It's quite a show.

We crossed the street again at sunset to enjoy the beach and watch the little crabs fling sand out of their holes with there super big claw.

So many people stop and park and watch the sun go down. What a lovely way to start and end a day together.
